The OFD is a new drain for Endoscopic Negative Pressure Therapy /Endoscopic Vacuum Therapy (ENPT/EVT). OFD uses a thin, open-pored membrane (Suprasorb CNP Drainage film, Lohmann & Rauscher) as drainage material instead of bulky polyurethane foams.
By this disadvantages of ENPT/EVT with drains using polyurethane foams are eliminated.
Open-pore Film Drainage (OFD) - A new multipurpose tool for endoscopic negative pressure therapy (ENPT) G Loske. et al.. Endosc Int Open 2018
Video demonstrates OFD
The advantages are:
- minimal diameter (4-6 mm or narrower)
- possibility of direct transnasal placement
- drainage element of any length 1-25 cm or even longer
- optimal drainage of fluids
- intracavitary and intraluminal ENPT
- single lumen drains
- double lumen drains with integrated feeding tube
- full surface suction effect
- less adhesion to tissue
- experience with esophagus, stomach and duodenum
- complimentary therapy with polyurethane foam drains
- easy to make and use
On the following articles, videos and lectures you will find more information about OFD. Several clinical experience are reported. Construction notes for the making of the drainage tool, which is currently not available for purchase, are demonstrated.
To build a OFD all types of drainage tubes are used. They are then covered with drainage film to apply vacuum suction on the tube with a vacuum pumpe.
For a double-lumen special probe that allows simultaneous enteral feeding via an integrated feeding tube, I use the Freka® Trelumina (Fresenius Kabi).

The new device is used for reflux drainage after Ivor-Lewis resection and enables enteral feeding simultanously. Video shows construction of OFD.
The innovative drainage can be made using a Freka® Trelumina (Fresenius Kabi) and the Suprasorb® CNP Drainage Film (Lohmann&Rauscher).

The figure illustrates the principle of prophylaxis with a dOFD: simultaneous nutrition, decompression, and reflux elimination with a drainage film (Suprasorb® CNP Drainage Film (Lohmann&Rauscher)) coated Freka® Trelumina (Fresenius Kabi). A continuous vacuum suction is applied to the drainage using an electronic pump.
The new devices are used to insert a drainage in pull-through technique. Video shows construction of OFD.
